History

The Lenape Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the area now known as Boonton. Europeans arrived in the early 18th century and established an ironworks, utilizing the power of the Rockaway River. Boonton soon became an industrial hub, with several relocated New York City factories operating in the town by the mid-1800s.

Boonton was officially incorporated as a township in 1867. The town continued expanding into the 20th century, eventually transitioning to more retail, service and residential activity as industry declined nationwide.
