Botox is approved by the FDA to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center in Towaco (Montville Township), Morris County, NJ, it is offered as part of our pain management care. It is a medical treatment, separate from cosmetic Botox.

Who Treats Migraine Here

Treatment is given by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, who leads pain management at the practice. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Read Dr. D’Alessio’s full bio.

Who Botox for Migraine Is For

Botox is FDA-approved for chronic migraine: 15 or more headache days a month, with headaches lasting 4 hours a day or longer. It is not approved for occasional migraine (14 or fewer headache days a month). At your first visit Dr. D’Alessio goes through your headache history, what you have already tried and your other medical conditions, and tells you whether Botox is a reasonable option for you.

Medical Botox Is Not Cosmetic Botox

The medicine is the same, but almost everything else is different:

  • It is given to prevent headaches from a diagnosed condition, not to soften lines.
  • It follows a set pattern of injection sites across the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck and upper shoulders.
  • It is handled as part of pain management, with your headache pattern reviewed at each visit and out-of-network insurance claims filed for you.

If you are looking for Botox or Dysport for lines and wrinkles, see our cosmetic neurotoxin treatments instead.

What a Visit Involves

  1. Consultation. Your headache pattern, past treatments and medical history.
  2. Treatment. A series of small injections following the FDA-approved pattern. The injections take about 15 minutes, and most people go straight back to their day.
  3. Repeat every 12 weeks. Botox prevents migraine rather than curing it, so treatment continues on a 12-week cycle. Some patients notice a change within about 2 weeks; everyone responds differently, and whether it is helping is reviewed with you at each visit.

Some patients with headaches also have tight muscle knots in the head and neck, where trigger point injections may help, or jaw clenching, where TMJ treatment is worth asking about.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get Botox for chronic migraines in Morris County, NJ?

Montville MedSpa & Pain Center, 624 Main Rd, Towaco, NJ 07082, on Route 202 in Montville Township, Morris County, offers Botox for the prevention of chronic migraine as part of its pain management care. Treatment is given by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. No referral is needed; call (973) 794-3958.

Who qualifies for Botox for chronic migraine?

Botox is FDA-approved to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine, which means 15 or more headache days a month, with headaches lasting 4 hours a day or longer. It is not approved for occasional migraines (14 or fewer headache days a month). Dr. D’Alessio reviews your headache history at the first visit to decide whether it is right for you.

What does a Botox for migraine visit involve?

The first visit is a consultation about your headache pattern, what you have already tried and your medical history. Treatment itself is a series of small injections into muscles of the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck and upper shoulders, following the FDA-approved pattern. The injections take about 15 minutes and you can go back to your day afterwards.

How often is Botox for migraine repeated?

Treatment is repeated every 12 weeks. Botox prevents migraine rather than curing it, so it only keeps working while treatments continue, and Dr. D’Alessio reviews with you at each visit whether it is helping.

Is Botox for migraine the same as cosmetic Botox?

No. It is the same medicine, but migraine treatment is a medical treatment for a diagnosed condition, with a different dose and different injection sites, given as part of pain management. Cosmetic Botox for lines and wrinkles is a separate service on our neurotoxins page.

Does insurance cover Botox for migraines?

Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is an out-of-network provider for pain management. Call (973) 794-3958 with your insurance card and the team will check your out-of-network benefits and tell you what to expect before anything is scheduled, then file the claim with your insurance on your behalf.

When might I notice a difference?

Some patients notice a change within about 2 weeks of their injections. Everyone responds differently and no result can be promised, which is why progress is reviewed at each 12-week visit.
